day 4 – the word on the street

Day 4

Day 4

“The Word on the Street”
Sunday, 9/7/08

Shirt: Peace with Obama – available at Cafe Press, and here are several other styles with the same theme.

Where:
1. Early Morning Breakfast at Family Restaurant –
no joke, it’s a family restaurant, and yesterday’s special was fried oatmeal (we did not order the special). We’ve gone there for breakfast a few times when we think we miss a greasy, traditional breakfast of potatoes, toast, etc, and this place has veggie sausage, so we’re drawn to that. Every time we go, we remember why it’s been so long. At any rate, this particular restaurant has veggie options, not to cater to vegetarians, but for the benefit of the senior crowd that it draws – to keep their hearts healthy. Although when you couple veggie sausage with fried potatoes, I’m not sure it’s all that healthy. Back to my point though, not our typical crowd, so we thought this might be a good place to check reaction to my shirt.

On the way in, a nice, older gentleman held the door for me. Then, he looked directly at my shirt for a few seconds, and gave no smile. He did not hold the second door for me. Maybe the two actions were not related. Everyone else seemed to just smile at G and not pay much attention to what I was wearing.

Most of the rest of the day centered around cleaning – three big dogs and a toddler leave us with plenty to clean. We did a walk in our neighborhood later in the day. Everyone was friendly. One of our neighbors stopped L a few weeks ago and told him he’ll have to explain why we support Obama (bumper sticker), that he doesn’t understand it and doesn’t support him. I don’t think he expected L to have so many reasons and so much good information. Doubt his mind was changed though. I haven’t run into this particular neighbor since my shirt campaign started, but always feel a tinge of anxiety when walking up the street.
