Day 19 back

Where:
1. Shipping some things, coffee house, post office –
I felt so cool in my shirt today. I’ll be wearing this one again soon. The kid working in the UPS store (with his lip pierced) gave me a big smile and nod. Do you guys all know Etsy? It’s my very favorite shopping space…especially for gifts. Most of the items are handmade, and there’s a bit of vintage thrown in too. I really try to be a responsible consumer and I feel so much better when I’m buying handmade items – especially when it comes to toys for G. He certainly has his share of noisy, plastic things, but we get most of those second hand. I’ve been re-reading Zoe Weil’s Above All Be Kind, and it has forced me to pause and think more about the choices I’m making. At one point, she writes something like – when purchasing a toy for your child, first consider whether or not a child in some other country suffered in a sweatshop to make it. Such a good point. When I shop Etsy I feel so good about what I’m buying – knowing who made it, where it came from, what it’s made from and supporting artists and often mamas who are trying to build work at home businesses. Plus the items available are just really cool and unique. Okay…enough on Etsy. Thanks again to Maarten for today’s awesome shirt!

Do you all get the Micheal Moore emails? If you don’t, you may not know that he released a new movie, Slacker Uprising, today, and it’s available for free download. I haven’t watched it yet, but it seems to be centered around young people voting. Maybe we should host a debate watching party Friday with a viewing of this to follow. Or better yet, someone else should plan that and invite us. 🙂
